Folio, 348 x 224 mm., contemporary vellum; some minor worming affecting few letters, title and first few leaves with dampstain at gutter margin. FIRST EDITION, without the two preliminary leaves of verses (added later to some copies), but containing the final revised state of the Altera Appendix (intended to be bound with the 1601 Rariorum Plantarum, with the additional quire ***4, which was added by Clusius after the second Appendix had already been printed. 2 engraved titles and numerous woodcuts in text. Second volume of the collected works of Clusius, also including works of da Orta, Monardes and Belon, mainly on non-European flora.
Provenance: Early marginalia; contemporary note on title that the book cost 4 florins "sine Ligatura" (in sheets): "The book was probably bound by this purchaser since the spine is lettered giving prominence to the Belon, and it is particularly this which he has annotated... the annotations, mostly brief notes of names and occurence, seem to be the result of first hand experience..."(Plesch catalogue) -- John Couch Adams (co-discoverer of the planet Neptune), bookplate -- Arpad Plesch, bookplate (sale, Sotheby's London, 16 June 1975, lot 137) -- Robert de Belder.
