Lot Essay

Waddel was Chief Photographer for the Houston Press and later in the army was the personal press photographer for Supreme Commander Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten. He took these photographs during a period of leave, primarily at the request of friends wanting photographs of Calcutta.

Individual and group portraits including snake charmers, performers, beggars, dock-workers, shoe-makers, street-sellers, housewives praying, a child bride, Brahmins at worship and Hindus bathing. Also street scenes and harbour views.
