Latin half-titles, hand-colored engraved additional title, Latin title-page printed in red and black followed by Dutch title-page printed in black, 3 hand-colored engraved plates of arms, 112 plates OF PLANTS ALL MAGNIFICENTLY COLORED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND, Latin and Dutch text printed in two columns. (Occasional minor marginal worming, heaviest on plates 18-24). Contemporary calf, spine gilt. Provenance: purchased from Hamill and Barker, 1969.
FIRST EDITION. "The second volume by Caspar Commelin contained an enlargement on some of the notes in Jan's book, with further notes on African plants. The original paintings...were mainly the work of Johan and Maria Moninckx and may be seen in the Library of the Hortus Botanicus in Amsterdam" (Hunt). Colored copies of this book are very rare.
