PROOF COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, published on 14 October 1912. The three tales -- 'A Smile of Fortune,' 'The Secret Sharer,' 'Freya of the Seven Isles,' -- are dedicated to Captain C.M. Marris whose unexpected appearance in October 1909, after marriage to a Malay Princess in Penang and twenty-one years in the East, had turned Conrad's mind back to his own experiences in the Malay seas.
