THE PROPERTY OF A DUTCH FAMILY
(Lots 162, 163 and 164)
The following three lots (162 to 164) were collected by Willem Bartholomeus van den Santheuvel (1794-1865). At the young age of fifteen, Van den Santheuvel inherited a large art collection from his uncle, Pieter van den Santheuvel van Driel. During his life, Willem Bartholomeus added many paintings by contemporary artists to the collection, such as the following three lots. The collection reflects the popular collecting taste of the time, including works by Oswald Achenbach and Alexandre Calame. Van den Santheuvel was raised into the Dutch aristocracy in 1816.
This is the first appearance of these paintings on the art market since they left the artist's studio.
