Small 2° (253 x 183mm). Engraved title vignette of French Royal arms, engraved frontispiece and 13 plates by Francesco Vasconi after Michetti, historical introduction in Italian and French. (Small tear in frontispiece just touching image, date written in ink at foot of title and on verso, occasional very light spotting.) 18th-century vellum over paper boards, spine lettered in gilt, marbled pastedowns.
FIRST EDITION, and a fine copy. Costanzi wrote this opera, "notable for its splendour of production" (Grove II p.461), to celebrate the birth of the Dauphin Louis, son of Louis XIV and Maria Leckzinska. Michetti (1704-78), wrote the libretto while in the employ of Cardianl Pietro Ottoboni, at whose Palazzo it was staged. One of the two cymbalist portrayed in the frontispiece may be Costanzi.
