The Cuthbert Brothers Local Post
In about 1892, a wealthy Belize merchant named Cuthbert established a daily carriage service to take letters from St. George's Cay to and from Belize. A local type-written stamp "Caye/Service./3 cents" was produced by Cuthbert Brothers who owned the steam yacht used for the service. Covers are known to exist dated between 28 July 1894 and 27 September 1895.
cover 1895 (21 Aug.) XU5 (a few light creases) to Belize, bearing the "Caye/Service/3 cents" local issue tied by straight-line "CUTHBERT BROS." h.s. with d.s. alongside; the cover with manuscript note on reverse "This is a Steamer Service we have during the Summer months to St. George's Caye, our chief summer resort. This is a private stamp of the firm, not of the Post Office. I hear it is quoted in some of the stamp papers." A major rarity. Photo
