Fifth edition in German of Pier de' Crescenzi's popular Opus ruralium commodorum, first printed in 1471 and requently reprinted. The text "relates to the multitudinous problems of husbandry and agriculture incident to the management of a great estate...[and] includes sections on hunting and fishing, the making of wine, and the diseases of animals, as well as on the cultivation of cereals, trees and plants" (Stillwell IScience, IV 615). Books 5 and 6 contain a discussion of the medicinal uses of plants and fruits. The woodcuts are reprints from the preceding edition of 1518, the woodcuts of rural activities being reverse cuts of those from earlier illustrated editions, while most of the plant woodcuts are derived from the cuts used in Johann and Conrad Hist's edition of the Herbarius Latinus (1484) [cf. lot 24] (two or three slightly larger plant cuts having previously been used in the Prüss-Beck Hortus Sanitatis series. The block for the title border was slightly cut away at top for this edition (see also lot 38).
