Wove paper issue of the first collected and revised edition of Cuvier's numerous articles on fossils, which greatly advanced the science of vertebrate palaeontology. In his lengthy introduction, first published in his collected edition, Cuvier sets forth his influential geological theory of "revolutions" in the earth's history, which was supposed to explain the mass extinction of species from previous epochs. The exactitude of his geological observations was of service to Lyell and Darwin, who adduced the evidence of fossils in support of the theory of evolution. Rare large-paper copy.
