Charles X was called comte d'Artois and later Monsieur before succeeding his brother Louis XVIII as King of France. The engraved plaque suggests that the present miniature was given by the Prince to a M. de Verdun before his accession to the throne in 1824.
Other versions of this miniature by Saint exist, in which alterations to the sitter's uniform have been made; see P. Jean-Richard, Miniatures sur ivoire, Musée du Louvre et Musée d'Orsay, Paris, 1994, nos. 567 and 568, illustrated p. 312. A portrait of the sitter in the same uniform, by Ambroise-Charlemagne-Victor Le Chenetier, was sold Christie's, Geneva 15 November 1994, lot 265.
