Two parts bound in one, 2o (329 x 202 mm). Text in double-columns. Part I: half-title, engraved title, letterpress title, 26 engraved plates (6 double-page), engraved double-page map and 6 engraved illustrations in text; part II: sectional title, 11 engraved plates (8 double-page), 2 engraved double-page maps, 5 engraved illustrations in text. Contemporary German blindstamped pigskin, front cover with black-stamped arms, initials and date, "J.W. Anno 1700." Provenance: Dr. Otto L. Schmidt (1863-1935), President of the Illinois State Historical Society (bookplate).
First German edition. Dapper's richly illustrated description of the empire of the Great Mogul and of India and Persia begins with accounts of natural history and topography. Later sections discuss costume, religion, customs and politics. While Dapper never journeyed to Asia himself, his history is one of the most reliable of the 17th century, using over 200 contemporary eye-witness sources. Blackmer 451.
