The present watercolour is a drawing of Miss Julia Emily Gordon, daughter of Sir Willoughby Gordon. The drawing was executed at Niton on the Isle of Wight in September 1833, while Wilkie was staying with Sir Willoughby Gordon.
Two other drawings by Wilkie of the sitter are in the Tate Gallery, London, having been bequeathed by Lady Gordon, one of which was included in the Wilkie Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, 1998, no. 74. In all three versions the sitter is depicted wearing the same African Fez.
