Original red cloth gilt, spine gilt-lettered (small spot on covers, hinges tender); modern red quarter morocco slipcase and chemise. Provenance: John Slatter (1818-1899, inscription from the author) -- 'H.R.S. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY DODGSON: 'J. Slatter from the Author. Jan. 27, 86'. The recipient was the Rector of Whitchurch and an Honorary Canon of Christ Church. 'Dodgson was well acquainted with Slatter, his wife, mother and daughter Bessie. He visited them from time to time, photographed them, and in January 1869 sent them an inscribed copy of Phantasmagoria' (Letters p.46n). The preface explains that each of the ten knots in the Tangled Tale embodies one or more mathematical problem or puzzle, 'some are serious, some almost squibbles, but all amusing' (WMGC).
