Contemporary red half roan, spine gilt (upper cover almost detached, extremities rubbed). Provenance: Wilson Burgess & M. Williams (pencil signatures on title). FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM OF THE AUTHOR'S FIRST PUBLISHED WORK, with "youuger" in publisher's preface. De Waal 417; Green & Gibson A1a. The first appearance, in book form, of Sherlock Holmes. Charles Doyle, the illustrator, was the author's father.
