Doyle writes to the pictorial editor of Once a Week, to draw his attention to 'a young Pre-Raffaelite artist, Edward [Burne] Jones'. Although the young artist is not yet known and his works 'early' in style, his 'drawings show much refinement and taste and a certain 'gothic' beauty'.

Together with: HOLMES, O.W., The Deacon's Masterpiece, or the wonderful "One-hoss Shay", A Logical Story by Oliver Wendell Holmes. Manuscript copy, title, 8pp., with pen-and-ink illustrations. Oblong 4to (230 x 277mm). 20th-century red morocco gilt by S.G. Rains, New York (extremities lightly scuffed). A fine manuscript copy of Holmes's satirical poem about logic, with charming illustrations. First published in 1858, Holmes's work was accompanied by illustrations by Howard Pile; the images here are signed 'F.A.S'. (3)
