[DRAMATIC EXTRACTS]. A manuscript compilation of "Maxim & Extracts from Plays," by an unidentified enthusiast, consisting of 237 numbered extracts (in four series), some with original sources or authors identified at end or in shoulder notes, with extensive extracts from Congreve, Dryden, Rowe and others. N.d., [second quarter 18th century].
4to (8 x 5 7/8 in.), 33 pages on 45 leaves ("Pro patria" watermark), written in ink in a slightly ornate, flourished cursive hand (first page a bit soiled), bound for Sir Thomas Phillips in plain gray Middle Hill boards (spine perished, edges of boards darkened).
A methodical and interesting compilation of extracts, proverbs and maxims from well-known authors, chiefly dramatic, ranging in length from one-line epigrams to songs of 12 or more lines. Sources cited by the compiler include Dryden's All for Love (1678), Southerne's The Fatal Marriage (1694), Congreve's Love for Love (1695), The Double Dealer (1694) and The Old Bachelor (1693), Nicholas Rowe's The Fair Penitent (1703), Daniel Defoe's Roxana (1724) and Dryden's Essay on Dramatick Poetry.
