The present drawing was executed during Lear's tour of the Holy Land during the spring of 1858. He arrived in Jerusalem during Holy Week and found it crowded and unpleasant. From Jerusalem he journeyed to Petra, Masada and the Dead Sea, which he described tersely as 'a wonder in its way'. He returned to Jerusalem and then onto Lebanon, arriving back in London by late summer 1858.
Another version of this view was sold Christie's, London, 22 November 1977, lot 190.
