The first with five figural groups labeled First Sergent, Sgt and Private, Campaigning, Sound of the Rally and Sentinel, signed lower center; the second with five figural groups labeled Corporal & Bugler, Colour Guard, Old & New Guard, Utah Invaders and On the Plains, signed lower center; the third with five figural groups labeled Ready for a Scout, Chief Bugler & Sergent Major, A Jessup Lancer, One of the "Forty" and Rifleman & Bugler, signed lower center.

Between 1861 and 1865, Forbes worked as a staff artist for Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper; his sketches of the Civil War were used for etches and book illustrations.
