Sergeant Charles John Morris served with six South African units. He joined the Cape Police at Kimberley in January 1899 and served through the Defence of Kimberley. Subsequently he served in the Field Intelligence Department. He had previously served in the Umtali Rifles in the Matabeleland Relief Force and was to be called out for duty with the Durban Militia Reserves in the Bambata Rebellion. During the Great War he served with the Durban Light Infantry in German South-West Africa and the 6th South African Infantry in East Africa.
