EINSTEIN ON THE DEATH OF HIS GRANDSON KLAUS
Hans Albert Einstein's second son Klaus was struck by diphtheria shortly after his parents' arrival in America, and died at the age of six in late 1938. Einstein wrote this letter after receiving the news of the tragedy: "At such a young age, you have been struck by the worst thing that loving parents can experience. This little boy promised to become a sane and balanced young man with a healthy outlook on life. Although I saw him for only a short time he was already as close to me as if he had grown up under my eyes. This blow has thus also hit me terribly hard after all the difficulties and bitterness that the past years have brought. But I think we belong to the [race of] the strong, who grow stronger and more selfless with every onslaught of fate. To remain benevolent towards one's fellow man when one has given up expecting anything for oneself from existence, this is what one should strive for..." Einstein concludes with more comforting words.
