EINSTEIN, Albert. Autograph letter signed ('Papa und Grosspapa') to his son Hans Albert, n.p., [27 October 1938], 1½ pages, 4°.
'YOU ARE BURDENED WITH THE NAME EINSTEIN WHICH IS DETESTED IN GERMANY'. Hans Albert has made an offer which seems illogical, but does him great credit. Einstein makes an analogy with a Chinese character and concludes that when conflict is avoidable, it must be avoided. He is concerned about the house in Zurich, and wonders if he should take over its running through a middle-man or a trust; Mileva and Eduard should move somewhere warmer -- either the canton of Ticino, or the south of France, if possible. As for Hans Albert and his family, 'It is lucky that you're here now and no longer camped on the volcano -- especially given that you're burdened with the name Einstein which is detested in Germany'. Margot has recently had an operation which she has coped with very bravely.
