(ink of the inscription slightly faded).
Ethel Hobday (née Sharpe) was a distinguished pianist and had been a friend of Brahms in Vienna (compare lot ). She married the viola player Alfred Charles Hobday in 1899, with whom she gave many recitals, concentrating in later years on chamber music.
