En 1888, Emile Bernard parvient à se rapprocher de Paul Gauguin et à travailler avec lui. Parallèlement, il expérimente les techniques de la gravure sur bois et sur zinc. Le présent dessin fait apparaître les recherches graphiques que l'artiste mène: les couleurs sont posées par aplats à l'intérieur d'un trait de crayon synthétisant et cloisonnant la forme, la profondeur est rendue par les contrastes chromatiques.
In 1888, Emile Bernard began to work more closely with Paul Gauguin. Parallel to his work under the master's tutelage, Bernard experimented with woodcut and zinc engraving. The present watercolour reveals the stylisations typical of print-making techniques: colours are laid in flat planes, a heavy black pencil line defines the contours and chromatic contrasts are employed to emphasize depth.
