En 1888, Emile Bernard parvient à se rapprocher de Paul Gauguin et à travailler avec lui. Parallèlement, il expérimente les techniques de la gravure sur bois et sur zinc. Le présent dessin fait apparaître les recherches graphiques que l'artiste mène: les couleurs sont posées par aplats à l'intérieur d'un trait de crayon synthétisant et cloisonnant la forme, la profondeur est rendue par les contrastes chromatiques.
