Lot Essay

The portrait painter, Thomas Phillips (1770-1845) was born in Dudley, Warwickshire. He was a student at the Royal Academy from 1791. He was elected A.R.A. in 1804; R.A. in 1808. Phillips was a professor of painting from 1825-1832. He married Elizabeth Enser of Fairfield and had two daughters and two sons.
