Emma Sandys was the sister of Frederick Sandys, whose lush portraits in the Rossettian mould served as inspiration to his younger sibling. Emma's work is similar in style and in the strength of its design. However, she established herself on her own professional terms, exhibiting at the Royal Academy and Norwich galleries and attracting patrons from amongst the local aristocracy.

Margeurite Dakin Ince was born on 11 September 1863 at 26 St George's Place, Knightsbridge, the daughter of Joseph Ince, a chemist's manager, and his French wife Elizabeth (née Marzials).
