Lot Essay

Hoogerheyden was a sailor himself in his youth and later became a respected Dutch marine artist during the second half of the eighteenth and first years of the nineteenth centuries. He spent most of his life in Middelburg, the provincial capital of Zeeland, and many of his works depict harbour scenes of the region around that city.
