The arms on this portrait identify the sitter as Thomas Jones, the second son of William Jones (d.1612), of Shrewsbury, and his wife Eleanor, daughter of Richard Owen, of Shrewsbury. In the pedigree of the Jones family, which was registered at the 1623 Herald's visitation of Shropshire, he is described as 'Alderman, six times Bailiff and the first Mayor of Shrewsbury.. ' and as having been High Sheriff in 1625. The arms and crest were confirmed to Thomas Jones' father on 16 June 1607. The engraving on the sitter's signet ring shows a typical merchant's mark. He married Sarah (for whom see the following lot), daughter of Richard Bavand, of Chester.
