Ernest Arthur Rowe (1863-1922)
Rowe was one of the foremost artists who painted formal gardens in watercolour, exhibiting regularly at the Royal Institute. He spent some time in London but lived for most of his life in Tunbridge Wells. Between 1899 and 1913 he held eight one-man shows at the Dowdeswell Galleries in London.
Of the one-man show of his watercolours at the Greatorex Galleries, Grafton Street in 1921, in which a number of the present watercolours were probably included, The Connoisseur commented: 'Mr E.A. Rowe arranged an attractive exhibition of watercolours in his accustomed metier. His drawings of old-world gardens are always pleasing, and evince marked sincerity of purpose'. (Connoisseur, LIX, p. 248).
