[ESTIENNE, Robert] Dictionarium, seu Latinae linguae Thesaurus ... Editio Secunda, Paris: Robert Estienne, 20 June 1543. 3 volumes, 2° (365 x 247mm.), large woodcut allegorical illustration on title of vol. one, initials, printed in double column (piece torn away from margin of title and repaired, marginal waterstaining to first few leaves of vol. one, a few spots and stains), 18th-century mottled calf, the covers with triple gilt fillet borders, the spines elaborately gilt in compartments with tan morocco lettering-pieces (joints cracked, extremities rubbed), bookplate (2). Adams D423; Schreiber 68.
"This definitive edition of Robert Estienne's Latin Thesaurus is considered 'his greatest monument of Latin scholarship' (Armstrong 22); it is the work that established him as the first scientific lexicographer". To this day it remains "the only complete work of its kind in the field of Latin lexicography; no other work has yet replaced or surpassed it, since the Thesaurus begun in Germany in 1894 is still far from completion" (Schreiber).
