Born in St Petersburg, Lanceray specialised in equestrian subjects with much of his work based on themes from his native Russia. His bronzes were cast both in Russia by the Chopin foundry and in Paris, where his large contemporary appeal resulted in the Susse foundry publishing a catalogue of over one hundred of his models. A rare departure from his native Russian cossack subjects, this ambitious group of three steeplechasers is amongst Lanceray's most impressive racing models. Initially cast by Chopin & Bertot, it was subsequently recorded as no. 104 in the Susse catalogue.
