Lot Essay

Fairfield Porter painted Birch Trees and Clouds in 1974, possibly inspired while spending his summers on Great Spruce Island on the coast of Maine. Porter's finest works display a rich luminosity achieved with masterful handling of paint. Among the artist's most celebrated canvases are outdoor scenes such as Birch Trees and Clouds, where Porter took take advantage of his keen perception of atmosphere, and his great observance of light and color.
