This small oil painting is reminiscent of a long mural painting originally in the Nigaristan palace executed by th court painter 'Abdallah Khan in 1812-13, depicting the court of Fath 'Ali Shah with foreign ambassadors in a variety of Eastern and Western dress. This painting no longer exists, but for reduced copies in the India Office Library (Robinson, B.W.: Persian Paintings in the India Office Library, London, 1976, pp. 250-3.) Other small scale versions have appeared on the art market in recent years. It is possible that the present lot was done as a souvenir of one particular ambassador's visit to the Persian court.
