Folio, 361 x 253 mm., contemporary vellum, extreme lower corner of upper cover gnawed, a few extremely minor paper flaws affecting some upper outer corners, Nnn4 with small tear, engraved title with vertical crease.
FIRST EDITION. Etched title and 101 etched and engraved plates on 100 sheets (Ff3 with engraving on recto and verso), 79 of them on botanical subjects and these mostly after Cornelis Bloemaerts and some after Philippe Gagliard, the remainder on classical subjects, some after Nicolas Poussin.
JEAN BAPTISTE COLBERT'S COPY of a splendid baroque book, the first devoted to citrus. Bloemaerts served his apprenticeship under Crispin de Passe and was patronized by Cortona and the Barberini family. The Hunt catalogue describes him as "one of the great Dutch 17th century botanical artists."
