The present lot follows the composition of a veduta by Canaletto, to be dated 1730-35, formerly in the Sir R.G. Harvey Estate, Birmingham, see W.G. Constable, J.G. Links, Canaletto: Giovanni Antonio Canal 1679-1768, 1989, I, plate 50; II, pp. 309-310, no. 246.
They list 4 other versions by Canaletto and his school. The present lot differs in several details from the prototype. The viewpoint is moved somewhat to the right and also the staffage of gondolas is different.
The picture shows at the extreme left the palazzi Barbarigo and Zulian. At the other side of the Canal Grande the Palazzi Pesaro are visible at the left of the Sant'Eustachio.
