The first connects with a painting, probably also by a follower of Rosa, in the Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe (L. Salerno, L'opera completa di Salvator Rosa, Milan, 1975, pp. 97-8, no. 162, illustrated). The figures derive from two separate engravings by Rosa, one of which is illustrated in Salerno, op. cit., fig. 162a (Bartsch, no. 61).
