We are grateful to Professor J. Douglas Stewart for pointing out that the horse in this picture is taken directly from that in Charles I with M. de St. Antoine, in the collection of H.M. The Queen (E. Larsen, The Paintings of Anthony van Dyck, Freren, 1988, p. 313, no. 792, ill. 295, pl. 16).
From the costumes, the painting would appear to date from the 1640s or 1650s, and it has been suggested that the background might represent a North African location.
