This picture relates to Van Dyck's double portrait of Prince Charles Louis, Elector Palatine, and his brother Prince Rupert, the two eldest surviving sons of Frederick V, the exiled Elector Palatine, and Elizabeth, sister of King Charles I. Van Dyck's double portrait was painted for King Charles I whilst his nephews were on an extended visit to the English Court in 1635/6. Prince Charles Louis had been nominated to the order of the Garter in 1633 (the original is now in the Musee Du Louvre, Paris; see O. Millar, Van Dyck, A Complete Catalogue of the Paintings, pp.485-6, no. IV. 69).
