A native of Rome, Michele della Valle first formed an interest in jewels at the age of sixteen. He worked for Laura Fürst, owner of the Rome jewellery store, where he learned the secrets of the goldsmith's art and became familiar with the top international jewellery brands. He opened his Rome store in Piazza di Spagna in the 1970s and his collaboration with Paolo Bulgari during the 1980s strengthened his love for coloured stones and his knowledge of haute joaillerie techniques. In 1989, he moved his office to Geneva where he has become famous as a jeweller to the international jet set. In 2004, della Valle and Birks (Canada's leading luxury jewellery retailer) and Mayors Jewelers (Florida based and a subsidary of Birks) launched an exclusive North American partnership designed to coincide with Birks' 125 anniversary.
Della Valle's work is typified by his fabulous use of colour - the full colours of the rainbow. From rubies, rubellites, red garnets, citrines, emeralds and green garnets, sapphires, aquamarines, amethysts, black and white diamonds to pearls of every hue, colour is everywhere in his jewels. Cut as cabochons, polished beads or pavé-set using pale colours, or bold strong contrasting tones each jewel is crafted with meticulous care. The fourty-four rainbow of jewels offered as lots 249 to 292, highlight della Valle's attention to detail, creative style and love of the extraordinary range of colour which can be found in the gemstones of the world. In addition they are bright, bold and undeniably glamorous.
