Lot Essay

Related to the signed picture by Francesco Castiglione formerly in the Balbi di Piovera Collection in Genoa (A. Percy, op. cit., fig. 36). A vertical pen study by Francesco for the same picture is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, A. Percy, op. cit., no. 118. Francesco's father Giovanni Benedetto treated the same subject twice in drawings in Berlin (KDZ 16383) and at Windsor Castle and in oil in a private collection in Dublin (A. Percy, op. cit., no. 19 and fig. 26). Another drawing close in style to the present one was also included in the 1968 sale as lot 69.
