Two other studies of Hartlepool, dateable about 1678, are in the City Art Gallery, York (see Francis Place, 1971, nos. 17 and 18). The style of the present drawing suggests that this earlier date, rather than the date on the mount, is more probable.
Place was the earliest English artist whose main preoccupation was landscape. His travels on foot around the British Isles anticipated the popular sketching tours of a century later, with the drawings of Wenceslaus Hollar and other Netherlandish artists such as Wyck being his principal inspiration.
