Francis Sargent Locke Osgood (1811-1850) and others.
The Floral Offering, A Token of friendship. Illustrated with Ten Beautiful Bouquets of Flowers Elegantly Coloured After Nature, by J. Ackerman. Philadelphia: T.K. & P.G Collins for Carey and Hart, 1847. 4 (264 x 212mm.) 10 hand-coloured lithographic plates. (Occasional light soiling or browning to plates, small marginal tears to title and following leaf, title and frontispiece neatly reinforced at inner margins.) Contemporary red half morocco, g.e. High quality plates with poetry, most by Osgood. The wife of the artist Samuel Stillman Osgood, Frances is now chiefly remembered for her role as friend and confidante of Edgar Allan Poe. The Dictionary of American Biography gives details of Osgood's life and career, and comments that 'Some of her minor volumes are very rare'. Cf. Bennett p.86 ('charming plates').
