Folio, 322 x 202 mm., contemporary blindstamped white pigskin over bevelled wooden boards, covers with multiple panels around a central lozenge, spine in six compartments with five raised bands, paper spine label at top and shelf mark in red at the foot, brass catches and clasps (one clasp defective), lower corner of upper cover with small dampstain and the leather worn, bands and upper cover slightly rubbed, small tear to plate 61, some very slight browning. In excellent condition.
FIRST EDITION. 3 parts. Letter press title in red and black, engraved title by C.N. Schurtz, 65 full-page engraved plates numbered 1-63 with bis plates 45 and 47, one engraving in text; many of the plates with multiple subjects, many devoted to botanical subjects, black letter, printed in double column. The first and second parts treat the natural history of the West and East Indies and their resources; the third deals with the native inhabitants, their government, manners and institutions, with particular reference to China.
