FRANCO, Niccolò. La Philena ... Historia amorosa vltimamente composta. [Mantua: G. Ruffinelli, 1547]. 8° (141 x 91mm). Woodcut oval portrait of the author on title and last page (a few headlines towards the end shaved or lightly cropped, title lightly spotted). 18th-century calf, gilt spine (head of spine repaired). FIRST EDITION of Franco's long imitation of Boccaccio's Fiammetta and one of his less successful works, unlike his Priapea which contains about 200 sonnets, mostly directed towards Aretino and which Tiraboschi called the most obscene book ever printed. Eventually, as a result of a foolish epigram directed towards Pius V in 1569, he was hanged in Rome.
GIOVIO, Paolo. De Romanis piscibus libellus. [Basel:] Froben, 1531. 8° (155 x 97mm). Woodcut device on title and last page (minor worming in inner margins of quires DD & EE, light waterstaining in first few leaves). 17th-century vellum. Provenance: Theobaldus Malpesius (contemporary signature on title) -- P. Boursault (probably Pierre-Flamin Boursault, died 1550, neo-latin poet from Loudun, signature on title) -- Oudin S.J. (possibly César Oudin, translator and lexicographer, early 17th-century signature on title) -- The Public College at Dijon (armorial bookplate and late 17th-century ownership inscription on title). Perhaps the fourth edition of Giovio's first published work, his entertaining book on the fish that the Romans ate most often. Grolier owned a copy of this edition. Adams G635; Brunet III, 582. (2)
