Francois Pycke was a pupil of Jean Delvin in Ghent. In 1914 he was awarded the Godecharleprijs, an award of prestige. He was a traveller-artist, who visited France, Italy, England and North-Africa. According to Paul Piron in his Belgische Beeldende Kunstenaars (Brussels, 1999) a contemporary critic wrote: "He dares to tackle themes, that would frighten any-one else; he has colours on his palette which sparkle the eye. No other artist can use colours as he is able to. He goes on and on brushing his paint and then finishes it all amazingly well".
