Stokes was expedition artist to the Amundsen-Ellsworth expedition which attempted to fly to the North Pole in 1925, a feat achieved by Richard E. Byrd in 1926. In the latter year Amundsen and Ellsworth joined Nobile on his airship crossing of the Arctic Ocean from Spitsbergen to Alaska on the airship Norge.
