Lot Essay

This view of New York depicts the lower tip of Manhattan Island in 1759. It appears to have been taken from a vantage point across the East River in Brooklyn, and is similar in many respects to the elaborate engraved view of New York, "A South Prospect of ye Flourishing City of New York in the Province of New York in America," circa 1717 by the artist William Burgis, although on a less elaborate scale.
