(Lacks engraved table, supplied in facsimile at end, a few light marginal spots.) Contemporary cloth gilt by C.W. Freise, Göttingen (extremities very lightly rubbed and spine very lightly sunfaded). Provenance: inscription from B. A. Gould to Hermann Militzer on endpaper, dated September 1847 (inscription on front endpaper).
The first of Gauss' four proofs of the fundamental theorem of algebra, which earned him the doctorate from the University of Helmstedt under the rather nominal supervision of J. F. Pfaff. The three subsequent proofs were published in 1815, 1816, and 1849. (DSB V, pp. 298-311). cf. Dibner 114.
