[GAYOT, François-Marie (d. 1768) and Félix-Louis (1733-69)] -- Guillaume Debure (1734-1820). Catalogue des livres de la bibliothèque de feu M. G***. Paris: G. Debure the elder, 1770-January 1771.
8o (195 x 124 mm). Contemporary marbled calf gilt (rebacked, preserving original spine-strip, corners somewhat worn). Provenance: Major Adrian McLaughlin (bookplate, Monaco sale 7th October 1980, lot 1384).
Auction sale catalogue, PRICED in contemporary manuscript, of the important Gayot collection, which was especially strong in French literature. Their splendidly illustrated and bound manuscript catalogue is not included in the sale, presumably to preserve the anonymity of the deceased collectors (the son had survived the father by only one year). Debure l'Aîné (1734-1820) had recently taken over the stock of his famous cousin Guillaume-François Debure le Jeune (1731-82), and this copy of the Gayot catalogue records that event with an inserted advertisement, printed by Didot in 1770, listing such Debure le Jeune staples as Bibliographie Instructive, the 1757 Girardot de Préfond and 1767 La Vallière sale catalogues. North 204; Blogie II, 11.
