The present drawing is a study for the Chinese tasselled lantern that Chinnery depicted in a great many of his portraits of Chinese officials. Two such portraits are in the collection of the Hong Kong Shanghai Bank: Howqua (Wu Bingjian), painted circa 1830, and Mowqua II (Lu Yuankin), see P. Conner, Chinnery and the China Coast, Hongkong, 1990, nos. 10 and 9.
The studies of A Horse and Carriage were originally in an album exhibited with Appleby Brothers, London.
We are grateful to Patrick Conner, for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
