H. Ward and W. Roberts, Romney, London, 1904, I, p. 43.
The sitter, the son of John, 2nd Earl of De La Warr, by his wife, Mary, daughter of Lieut.-General John Wynyard, was born on 24 April 1757. He succeeded his father on 22 November 1777 and died unmarried in January 1783.
Please note that the prime version of this portrait appears to be the one still at Fyvie Castle and the Literature relates to that painting rather than the present lot.
